I Kings 22:41Sefaria

The historical account shifts its focus back to the kingdom of Judah [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because the Davidic dynasty serves as the core of the nation, the historical record typically anchors itself in the kings of Judah, weaves in the rulers of Israel according to the timeline, and then returns to its main subject. Therefore, after concluding the extensive history of Ahab, the focus naturally pivots back to Judah to introduce the era of Jehoshaphat [אברבנאל]. He took the throne after four full years of Ahab's rule had passed. This timeline aligns with the earlier historical record, which notes that Ahab began his rule during the thirty-eighth year of Asa's reign, and Asa died in his forty-first year [מצודת דוד]. This transition marked the beginning of a long reign for Jehoshaphat that would eventually pass to his son [רלב״ג].

Jehoshaphat oversaw a period of great spiritual and political complexity. He was a deeply righteous leader who followed the path of his father, Asa. His devotion to God was genuine, reflecting true inner intent rather than just outward public displays. However, his reign had two notable shortcomings. First, he did not completely eliminate the local altars, as the people continued to offer sacrifices there and he was unable to stop them before taking power. Second, he chose to form a peace alliance with Ahab, the wicked king of Israel.

Despite these flaws and his alliance with a corrupt ruler, God did not punish him severely. His vast merits, deep piety, commitment to justice, and efforts to rid the land of idolatry shielded him. Still, his association with the wicked kings of Israel did not go completely unanswered. He suffered a significant loss when his fleet of ships was destroyed on a mission to acquire gold. This event served as a profound moral lesson, leading him to later reject any further partnership with Ahab's son, Ahaziah [אלשיך].
