I Kings 22:48Sefaria

וּמֶ֥לֶךְ אֵ֛ין בֶּאֱד֖וֹם נִצָּ֥ב מֶֽלֶךְ׃

During this period, the political reality of the region was defined by shifting balances of power, with smaller nations often finding themselves entirely under the control of stronger neighbors. At this specific time, the kingdom of Edom was completely subject to the kingdom of Judah. Because of Judah's firm strength, Edom was not permitted to crown an independent monarch. Instead, the territory was managed by an appointed deputy who effectively ruled over the local population [מצודת דוד]. This official operated under the direct authority of the Judean king, whether he was a native Edomite selected for the role or an administrator sent directly from Judah [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The primary approach among commentators is that this absolute control originated generations earlier during the reign of King David. After conquering Edom, David removed their kings and installed his own deputies to maintain order. This system of governance was preserved by the kings of Judah for generations, lasting steadily until the days of King Jehoshaphat. The historical record highlights this ongoing dominance specifically to mark the end of an era. It emphasizes that while Edom remained under Judah's authority throughout Jehoshaphat's life, the situation drastically changed immediately afterward. When his son Jehoram took the throne and followed an evil path, the Edomites rebelled, successfully broke free from Judah's grip, and finally crowned their own king. The long-held honor and authority of Judah over Edom officially concluded with Jehoshaphat.

This total control over Edom carried significant practical advantages. Because Jehoshaphat had successfully subdued Edom, Moab, and Ammon, he was able to launch a major maritime project. He began building ships in Ezion-geber, a port located on the Red Sea well within Edomite territory. Yet, this ambitious plan ended in sudden disaster. The fleet was wrecked on the shore before the ships could ever set sail. This destruction came about because Jehoshaphat chose to form a partnership with the wicked Ahaziah, which led God to actively dismantle his efforts [מלבי״ם].
