I Kings 22:7Sefaria

Faced with an absolute consensus of four hundred prophets guaranteeing success in battle, the king of Judah remains unconvinced and searches for an authentic voice. His inquiry highlights the deep divide between true and false prophecy and the method by which one can tell them apart.

The primary approach among commentators is that the king immediately recognized the four hundred men standing before him were not genuine prophets of God. He relied on an ancient tradition which teaches that no two prophets ever deliver their message using the exact same style or wording. Because all four hundred men repeated the precise same words and message, it was clear their declarations held no truth and they were false prophets [רש״י, רד״ק, מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, חומת אנך].

Even though he realized these men were actually prophets of Baal or Asherah, he chose not to confront the king of Israel directly with this harsh truth. Out of respect for the monarch, he spoke gently. Rather than openly dismissing the false prophets, he simply asked if there was a prophet of God available to consult [רד״ק]. This careful request was also driven by a lingering fear that Jezebel might have already killed all the true prophets, leaving no survivors behind [מצודת דוד].

When asking for another prophet to seek advice and guidance from [ביאור שטיינזלץ], his request can be understood in two ways. It might simply be a request for an additional voice to join the consultation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, others explain that the request was not for an additional prophet of God, but rather a search for a completely different kind of prophet. Since he completely distrusted the four hundred men and knew they did not speak for God, he was asking if there was anyone else present who was actually a genuine prophet, so they could finally hear His true word [רלב״ג].
