פרשת כי תבוא

Deuteronomy 28:17Sefaria

אָר֥וּר טַנְאֲךָ֖ וּמִשְׁאַרְתֶּֽךָ׃

The sequence of divine punishments reveals a careful and gradual escalation. When blessings are granted, the gift of children naturally precedes material wealth, as family is the most cherished and significant good. However, when punishments are issued, this order is deliberately reversed, with the loss of food and property occurring before any harm comes to the children.

The primary approach among commentators explains this shift as an expression of God's mercy. He does not rush to strike lives first. Instead, the initial blow falls on a person's assets and daily food supply to serve as a warning. This gradual approach is designed to encourage an individual to repent, giving them a chance to change their ways before a much harsher penalty reaches their family.

Alongside this idea of a gradual warning, another perspective points to a direct chain of events. Rather than being independent punishments, the harm to the family is a natural consequence of the ruined food supply. When provisions are cursed and scarcity sets in, the resulting lack of nourishment inevitably impacts the children and the livestock [שפתי כהן].

A different approach focuses on the visibility of the affected property. Items used for storing and preparing food represent assets that are generally kept out of sight. Because damage to hidden wealth is not immediately obvious, it is closely followed by a blow to the family. Harm to children is entirely public and undeniable, ensuring that the reality of the punishment becomes fully tangible and recognized by all [העמק דבר].
