יְשַׁלַּ֣ח יְהֹוָ֣ה ׀ בְּ֠ךָ֠ אֶת־הַמְּאֵרָ֤ה אֶת־הַמְּהוּמָה֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּגְעֶ֔רֶת בְּכׇל־מִשְׁלַ֥ח יָדְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעֲשֶׂ֑ה עַ֣ד הִשָּׁמֶדְךָ֤ וְעַד־אֲבׇדְךָ֙ מַהֵ֔ר מִפְּנֵ֛י רֹ֥עַ מַֽעֲלָלֶ֖יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲזַבְתָּֽנִי׃

Following general warnings, a detailed progression of suffering unfolds, targeting both material success and inner peace [ביאור יש״ר, אלשיך]. Despite the severity of these afflictions, they are initiated with an underlying sense of mercy. The punishment begins indirectly, delivered through messengers rather than a direct strike from God, serving as a compassionate warning to inspire repentance [אלשיך, שפתי כהן]. Alternatively, this suffering is the natural, immediate consequence of abandoning the proper path. God does not actively inflict the pain; rather, He withdraws His protective providence, allowing the destructive results of sin to simply run their natural course [רש״ר הירש].

The afflictions manifest in three consecutive waves. First comes a pervasive sense of lack and loss, where desired outcomes are withheld in every human endeavor [רש״י, אבן עזרא, ביאור יש״ר]. This often takes the form of severe financial ruin within the business world [העמק דבר], creating a stinging pain comparable to agonizing illness or the sharp prick of thorns [רש״י, נתינה לגר].

Following this material loss is a profound state of panic, confusion, and disorder [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This terror can be triggered by external forces, such as frightening natural phenomena like thunder and hail [רשב״ם], or it can emerge internally as mental instability. Such psychological confusion leads a person to make contradictory choices, preventing them from completing their work [אבן עזרא, ביאור יש״ר] and ultimately accelerating their financial collapse [העמק דבר].

The third wave acts as a relentless reprimand, which commentators interpret across agricultural, social, and psychological dimensions. Economically, it operates as a divine decree that halts agricultural growth, preventing seeds from sprouting [רשב״ם, חזקוני, בכור שור] and turning former blessings into deficits [ביאור יש״ר]. Socially, the individual faces constant scolding and isolation from their community [בכור שור, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This can even fracture the broader social fabric, as financially ruined and stressed property owners endlessly lash out at their workers [העמק דבר]. Psychologically, this reprimand is experienced as a deep, internal burden of guilt and an inescapable feeling of divine disapproval, which shatters all peace of mind and sabotages any further initiatives [רש״ר הירש, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

These vulnerabilities extend far beyond agricultural labor. They infiltrate the lives of merchants and professionals, ensuring that every commercial venture and human initiative is compromised [העמק דבר]. Although the threat warns of swift and total destruction, the primary approach among commentators is that this does not imply the complete annihilation of the nation. The threat serves as a boundary, bringing the people to the very edge of ruin without crossing into actual extinction, thereby allowing a faithful remnant to survive or leaving room for further stages of discipline [רש״ר הירש, אלשיך]. From a material perspective, this rapid destruction refers not to physical death, but to the sudden and absolute collapse of a person's wealth and business [העמק דבר]. God preserves His people, using this acute suffering to clarify the source of their pain so that they might easily find their way back to Him through repentance [שפתי כהן].

The root of all this suffering lies entirely in destructive human choices and the abandonment of the Torah, rather than any inherent flaw or evil inclination planted by God [שפתי כהן, העמק דבר]. On a deeper level, the mere act of forsaking God is enough to trigger this initial wave of hardship. However, the evil deeds themselves generate corrupting spiritual forces that actively demand justice. If a person fails to repent, these forces ensure that even harsher, more direct punishments will eventually follow to cleanse the spiritual damage caused by those actions [אלשיך].
