פרשת כי תבוא

Deuteronomy 28:9Sefaria

The divine promise reaches far beyond physical wealth and material blessings, revealing the true eternal and spiritual reward of the soul. The ultimate destiny of the Israelites is not merely to enjoy worldly abundance, but to become an exemplary, distinct nation. They are meant to live under an extraordinary, supernatural level of Divine guidance, serving as a moral and spiritual model for all nations on earth [צרור המור, רש"ר הירש, ביאור יש"ר].

The assurance that God will establish the nation means He will set them upright [אבן עזרא, חזקוני]. This hints at a special, individualized providence [רלב"ג], as well as an exceptionally proud and upright stature that will leave the nations of the world in awe [שפתי כהן]. This bond is an eternal connection that lasts forever [שפתי כהן], positioning the people directly before Him [אוהב גר]. Some even suggest that the Israelites will take the place of the ministering angels in standing before God [אור החיים].

This promise is rooted in deep historical covenants. It echoes the oath made at Mount Sinai to form a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, or perhaps the earlier covenant of circumcision established with Abraham [רמב"ן]. Another perspective links this to the promise made during the exodus from Egypt, where God declared He would take the people as His own [שפתי כהן]. Historically, this vision of a holy and elevated nation reached its most perfect fulfillment during the reign of King Solomon [מלבי"ם].

Reaching this spiritual height depends on specific conditions [בכור שור]. Fulfilling this destiny involves both internal and external dedication. Guarding the commandments refers to honoring God's will within the thoughts of the heart, while walking in His ways involves translating those thoughts into actual physical deeds [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators sees holiness as the direct result of avoiding sin and observing the negative commandments. This careful avoidance preserves the image of God within a person and ensures that future generations remain pure and free from evil [אור החיים]. Furthermore, walking in God's ways requires moral behavior and kindness between people, imitating His divine traits of mercy and grace [הכתב והקבלה].

Alternatively, a unique perspective views the requirement to guard the commandments not merely as a condition, but as a distinct blessing for those who strive for a life of separation and deep spiritual connection. Often, practical involvement in daily commandments, particularly those involving interactions with other people, can distract a person from their spiritual focus. To counter this, God promises special divine assistance. Even when individuals are busy with practical, worldly commandments, God will elevate them into a holy nation, allowing them to maintain their intense level of holiness and spiritual connection completely unharmed [העמק דבר].
