Deuteronomy 28:12Sefaria

Material prosperity is not a random occurrence, but a direct reflection of the relationship between human action and Divine providence. Through the observance of the Commandments, the natural channels of abundance are opened, granting the Israelites ultimate economic independence. The control over rain is held directly in God's hand, rather than being delegated to an angel or a natural force. This is because rainfall is intricately tied to human free will and the actions of the Israelites, distinguishing it from other miracles that were pre-programmed into the creation of the world Furthermore, when the Israelites fulfill God's will, rain does not merely follow the ordinary laws of nature, such as the evaporation of water from the earth. Instead, it descends directly from above as a pure and holy emanation of abundance

This heavenly treasure is unlocked exclusively for the Israelites and by their merit, even if others attempt to obstruct it The heavens serve as the source of life for the world [בכור שור]. While God possesses storehouses of destructive forces, such as heavy snow and hail, He ensures that only the treasury of goodness and blessing is opened for the Israelites This blessing is defined by its perfect timing. On a practical level, rain falls during convenient hours, such as at night or on the Sabbath, ensuring it never becomes a nuisance to daily life [בכור שור]. On a providential level, the blessing arrives at the exact moment it is needed. It can appear at the very last second, much like the historical account of Nakdimon ben Gurion, who was saved from a massive debt by a downpour that arrived just as his deadline expired [אדרת אליהו].

The Divine blessing flows through two primary channels: agriculture, which relies on the rain, and commerce. The abundance of rain naturally leads to lower food prices, which in turn elevates the value of money. Even a small coin becomes blessed, as its purchasing power increases dramatically, allowing one to buy a multitude of goods This unique prosperity inevitably creates a stark economic divide between the Israelites and the surrounding nations. While the land of Israel enjoys agricultural bounty, other countries will face droughts or rotting harvests

This disparity transforms the Israelites into international creditors. They will be able to purchase goods from foreigners cheaply and in cash, only to sell them back on credit for a profit [הכתב והקבלה]. Crucially, their wealth will be entirely self-sustaining. In the ordinary world of commerce, even the wealthiest individuals borrow money to fund their enterprises or to lend to others. The Israelites, however, are promised a wealth so absolute and independent that they will never require any external financial assistance This economic supremacy naturally brings elevated social and political standing. The Israelites will emerge as leaders, guided directly by God rather than being subservient to celestial ministers This position of power also eliminates the practical risks of lending; out of deep awe and respect, foreign nations will willingly come forward to repay their debts, sparing the Israelites the need to chase after them

The overarching structure of these promises highlights God's profound kindness. When delivering punishments, God typically begins with minor property damage as a gentle warning, only later affecting the individual and the land. Blessings, however, operate in reverse; they shower the greatest gifts—children and agricultural bounty—immediately, before extending to all other areas of life [תולדות יצחק]. Yet, the primary approach among commentators is that to unlock this extraordinary reality, an individual must first commit to avoiding negative prohibitions before actively pursuing positive Commandments. True Divine blessing simply cannot take root and flourish in a space compromised by wrongdoing [אור החיים].
