וַתִּרְעַ֥שׁ הָאָ֖רֶץ וַתָּחֹ֑ל כִּ֣י קָ֤מָה עַל־בָּבֶל֙ מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת יְהֹוָ֔ה לָשׂ֞וּם אֶת־אֶ֧רֶץ בָּבֶ֛ל לְשַׁמָּ֖ה מֵאֵ֥ין יוֹשֵֽׁב׃

The sudden collapse of a mighty empire sends shockwaves across the world as a divine decree of absolute destruction is set into motion. The fall of the Babylonian empire is accompanied by a profound, paralyzing terror. When it becomes clear that God's plan is coming to fruition, the land itself seems to shudder in deep fear. The primary approach among commentators is that this shaking represents a severe, physical shuddering.
