Deuteronomy 28:59Sefaria

Divine retribution is often perceived merely as physical suffering, but it actually operates as a precise, unusual, and deeply spiritual system designed to achieve a specific goal. When God brings these afflictions, He does not merely increase their quantity [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Rather, He unleashes unprecedented events that completely defy the known laws of nature, marking a clear departure from the normal rules of the world This supernatural shift is not random; it serves as a divine sign. It demonstrates God's providence to the entire world, proving the truth of the Torah and the universal obligation to obey it [רש ר הירש]. Additionally, these extraordinary measures are sometimes seen as a consequence for those who disrespect God's holiness and curse His name [תורה תמימה].

On a deeper level, the most profound affliction is not physical pain at all, but rather the forgetting of Torah and the loss of clear knowledge. The destruction of the Temple and the removal of wise scholars create a state of profound spiritual confusion. The people lose their direction, their legal guidance, and sound advice. Consequently, they suffer without understanding the cause of their pain or knowing how to correct their actions

The severe physical illnesses that strike—specifically those that erupt during a siege as a result of intense fear, distress, and starvation [ביאור יש״ר]—are characterized by their enduring nature. They are long-lasting, continuous, and do not fade away quickly Their persistence is due to their role as God's faithful messengers. They are sent to discipline a person and guide them back to the correct path, much like the painful but well-meaning correction provided by a friend

This loyalty to their divine mission is absolute. Even if a person attempts to cure these ailments with natural medicine, the sickness will not depart until God explicitly commands it to leave [אור החיים]. The afflictions are assigned an exact lifespan meant to cleanse a specific sin, and they vanish on their own only when their task is complete [משכיל לדוד]. This strict adherence to a predetermined schedule can sometimes lead to a tragic misunderstanding. A person might turn to idol worship seeking a cure on the exact day the illness is scheduled to end. Because the illness remains faithful to its timeline and departs right at that moment, the sinner mistakenly believes the idol provided the cure. This illusion causes them to stray entirely from the truth and lose their portion in the World to Come [בכור שור].
