פרשת כי תבוא

Deuteronomy 28:58Sefaria

The essence of a spiritual life extends far beyond the mere execution of physical tasks; it demands a profound, internal connection with the Creator. A critical turning point in the Torah's rebuke shifts the focus away from the technical failure to perform religious duties, pointing instead to the spiritual void left when one severs their emotional bond with God. The primary approach among commentators is that the ultimate purpose of all commandments is to achieve a deep, genuine awe of Heaven. While physical actions are bound by time and end the moment they are completed, true reverence is an eternal, constant state of mind that serves as God's greatest treasure. However, this inner feeling cannot exist in a vacuum; it requires the practical performance of both positive and negative instructions to be entirely whole [רבנו בחיי]. The physical actions act as the necessary stepping stones designed to elevate a person to this state of awe [ביאור יש״ר].

A sharp warning is directed against superficial religious practice. Observing traditions purely out of social pressure, fear of other people, or a desire for wealth and honor, without any genuine inner reverence, is considered a desecration of God's name. Actions driven by external compulsion or the need for human approval are inherently flawed and will ultimately fade away. Such insincere practice not only brings severe consequences but also causes wisdom to vanish from the generation [כלי יקר].

The reality of exile presents a significant challenge, as many commandments are tied directly to the Land of Israel and cannot be performed elsewhere. Yet, individuals are expected to fulfill whatever is currently within their power, while holding a sincere intention in their hearts to perform the rest once it becomes possible. With this mindset, God considers it as though they have fulfilled everything required of them [אלשיך]. This expectation is especially crucial for survivors who have already endured the hardships of exile and divine discipline. They are expected to internalize the lessons of their past, awaken spiritually, and return to sincere prayer and practice. Failing to cultivate genuine awe after surviving such trials will result in even heavier consequences [העמק דבר].

This relationship with God is framed by His distinct attributes. Recognizing Him as the center of the universe means understanding that He bestows immense honor and goodness upon those who follow His paths, while remaining a formidable force of justice against those who choose to rebel [רש ר הירש, אלשיך]. Even the divine names traditionally associated with compassion and personal care carry an underlying promise of strict justice should the Israelites break their covenant [אלשיך]. On a practical legal level, this profound demand for respect forms the basis for the rule that anyone who curses the name of God is subject to the penalty of lashes [צפנת פענח].
