Genesis 24:12Sefaria

Standing at a critical juncture often brings a person face to face with human limitations. Arriving at a well in a foreign land, Eliezer realizes that securing the right wife for Isaac requires more than standard effort; it demands open divine intervention. He begins his prayer by asking God to show kindness to his master, directly tying the success of his mission to Abraham's merit and to Abraham's defining characteristic of kindness [רבנו בחיי].

At the heart of his plea is a request for God to prepare and arrange the encounter While people usually view unplanned events as mere chance, Eliezer asks for exact divine providence. He wants God to take full control of the mission and orchestrate a meeting that might appear random to the human eye, but is completely directed by Him

The necessity for such a specific test stems from several deep concerns. Eliezer cannot simply search the city for a bride. He worries that Abraham's relatives might try to deceive him by offering a maidservant to secure such a wealthy and prestigious match [אור החיים]. Furthermore, locals might falsely praise a woman who lacks true moral character. Only God, who sees into the human heart, can guide him to the truth [ביאור יש״ר]. He also expects the family to resist sending their daughter to a distant land with a servant. By asking for a clear, miraculous sign, he hopes to create an undeniable reality that will leave the family no choice but to admit the match is God's will

By asking for this to happen on that exact day, Eliezer seeks immediate divine guidance for that specific moment and place [מלבי״ם]. He hopes God will send a dignified, modest woman who does not typically leave her home, but who steps out to the well on this highly unusual day. This ensures she is unknown to the public, which explains why he later must ask for her identity [כלי יקר].

The specific conditions of the test are carefully chosen. Eliezer is looking for a woman who reflects the deep hospitality of Abraham's household. More importantly, she needs to mirror Isaac, who is characterized by a willingness to give far beyond what is required. Therefore, the test demands a woman who will take the initiative to offer water not only to him but also to his entire caravan of camels [אלשיך].

Although there is some critique of this approach, noting that a person is commanded to act through natural means rather than relying on tests that might yield the wrong result [נחלת יעקב], Eliezer's prayer is answered with unprecedented speed. His request is fulfilled before he even finishes speaking. This rapid response occurs because he is praying for a positive outcome in his role as a messenger. In this context, an immediate answer serves as clear proof of God's will, unlike public miracles, which often require a delay so they do not appear to be a trick [רס״ג].
