ירמיהו, פרק נ״א, פסוק ט״ו

Jeremiah 51:15Sefaria

The absolute power of God as the Creator stands in complete contrast to the uselessness of idols. By shaping the earth and establishing the heavens, God proves His ultimate control over all existence and His ability to keep His promises.

A similar message appears earlier in the prophecies of Jeremiah with slight variations, but its repetition here is aimed directly at the Babylonians. The Babylonians placed their trust in false gods and mistakenly believed that their national success came from idol worship. Against this arrogance, the prophet declares that God, who is the portion of Jacob, formed all of creation. A time will come when everyone will finally recognize His power. The nations will understand that idols hold no real substance, and they will witness how God actively fights the battles of Israel [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].

The act of creating the earth with His power proves that everything belongs to God and rests entirely in His hands. Because He owns it all, He has the absolute ability to fulfill every word He speaks [מצודת דוד]. Acknowledging that God created all of reality also illustrates His continuous supervision and active involvement in the world [מלבי״ם].

This divine creation specifically focuses on the inhabited regions of the earth where human beings live [מצודת ציון]. Above these populated areas, God spread out the heavens just like someone pitching and setting up a tent [מצודת דוד].
