The collapse of the Babylonian empire is not a random event, but a carefully planned act of divine providence. God announces this downfall in advance to remove any fear from the hearts of those who hear the news [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This ruin is so exact and fitting that it perfectly aligns with the laws of nature and the heavens, which work together to bring about Babylon's end [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. God directs His attention specifically to deliver this disaster [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. The destruction will strike the Babylonian idols first. Invading armies will shatter the statues, disgrace them, and loot the gold that covers them [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

The resulting devastation upon the land is understood in two distinct ways. One approach focuses on the emotional toll, suggesting that the Babylonians will be filled with deep shame when they see the idols they trusted shattered and exposed as completely worthless [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. An alternative perspective views the devastation physically, explaining that the land of Babylon itself will dry up, left entirely barren and stripped of all its former wealth and goodness [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].

The final defeat will be defined by paralyzing terror. Overwhelmed by fear, the people of Babylon will not dare to step outside their city to fight their enemy face to face. They will choose to lock themselves securely within their walls.
