הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י נִצָּ֖ב עַל־עֵ֣ין הַמָּ֑יִם וְהָיָ֤ה הָֽעַלְמָה֙ הַיֹּצֵ֣את לִשְׁאֹ֔ב וְאָמַרְתִּ֣י אֵלֶ֔יהָ הַשְׁקִֽינִי־נָ֥א מְעַט־מַ֖יִם מִכַּדֵּֽךְ׃

Finding a suitable bride to enter Abraham's household was a delicate mission that required more than chance. Eliezer’s encounter at the well and his subsequent retelling of the events to Rebecca's family reveal a highly calculated process. Abraham's home was built on the foundation of hospitality, demanding a woman who possessed seven essential traits: generosity, patience, cleanliness, quickness, wisdom, pleasant speech, and a welcoming face. Eliezer's actions at the well were not a random guess but a practical examination of these qualities. By standing at a busy, public water source where other women were present, he ensured that her willingness to help came from genuine generosity rather than a lack of other options. Furthermore, her initiative to water his camels demonstrated a remarkable blend of wisdom and cleanliness. By giving the remaining water to the animals, she avoided drinking from a jug touched by a stranger who might be ill, while also sparing him the insult of pouring the water out right in front of him [שפתי כהן].

When recounting the events to her family, Eliezer subtly and wisely alters his story. He intentionally leaves out the exact conditions he had set in his private prayer to God, as well as the specific details of the test involving the camels. He does this to prevent the family from finding any minor discrepancies between his original plan and what actually happened, which could lead them to argue that the divine sign was not perfectly fulfilled [העמק דבר].

Another deliberate adjustment in his speech is the specific term he uses to describe the young woman, which differs from the word he used during his private prayer. Commentators offer various explanations for this shift. From a practical standpoint, Eliezer may have chosen this alternate word to avoid unnecessary arguments with the family regarding her exact age [העמק דבר]. Alternatively, assuming the family primarily spoke Aramaic, he might have selected a term more suited to their daily language, even though they also understood Hebrew [חזקוני]. Others suggest the chosen word serves to highlight her diligence and quickness in her work, rather than merely pointing out her youth [תולדות יצחק]. A deeper approach contrasts the core meanings of the two terms. The word used in his prayer to God signifies spiritual and intellectual awakening. However, when speaking to a family whose focus was largely on material reality, Eliezer adapted his language, selecting a term that emphasized the physical and material vitality of her youth instead [הכתב והקבלה].
