The idols worshipped by the nations, particularly the massive statues of Babylon, possess no real substance and are nothing more than false illusions. These objects are simply the physical creations of human beings who have strayed from the path of reason and logic [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].
Ultimately, a specific time of divine accounting awaits them. When this moment of judgment arrives, God will hold the Babylonians fully responsible for their actions [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. As God exacts His retribution, both the lifeless idols and the people who worship them will be entirely and permanently destroyed [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
This absolute destruction highlights a fundamental difference between the nations of the world and the Israelites. The nations are governed by appointed heavenly ministers. When their designated time of judgment comes and their guiding heavenly force falls, the nation under its control perishes right alongside it. In contrast, the Israelites are placed under the direct rule of God. Because He lives and endures forever, His people are guaranteed to exist eternally and will never face total destruction [חומת אנך].
