אֶֽל־יִדְרֹ֤ךְ (ידרך) הַדֹּרֵךְ֙ קַשְׁתּ֔וֹ וְאֶֽל־יִתְעַ֖ל בְּסִרְיֹנ֑וֹ וְאַֽל־תַּחְמְלוּ֙ אֶל־בַּ֣חֻרֶ֔יהָ הַחֲרִ֖ימוּ כׇּל־צְבָאָֽהּ׃

A dramatic battle cry echoes across the battlefield, signaling the total destruction of Babylon. The scene captures a tense moment as archers prepare their weapons and warriors stand ready in their heavy iron armor, bracing for a fierce clash.

The primary approach among commentators is that this call to arms is directed at the enemies of Babylon. The attackers are commanded to aim their weapons directly at the city. The archer is told to draw his bow exactly to the target God designates [רש״י], driven by a destructive spirit that God awakens within the troops to ensure they carry out His will [מלבי״ם]. Alongside the archers, the armored warrior is urged to stand proud and tall, lifting himself up for the fight [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. He is told to strap on his iron protective gear, designed to shield him from the heavy blows of swords and spears [מצודת ציון, רד״ק].

In contrast to the image of a confident advancing enemy, another perspective flips the scene entirely, interpreting the command as a picture of Babylon's absolute helplessness. According to this approach, the Babylonian soldiers themselves are the focus. They will not even bother to draw their bows or put on their armor, realizing that their defeat is already guaranteed and any resistance is simply pointless [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם בביאור המילות]. From another angle, the call serves as an urgent warning to the fighters, demanding that they do not let their hands slacken or give up in the midst of the battle [רש״י].

Regardless of who is holding the weapons, the final instruction given to the conquering forces is uncompromising. They are ordered to show no mercy to the young men of Babylon and to bring absolute ruin and devastation upon the city [מצודת ציון]. This total destruction must wipe out the entire military force of the nation [מצודת דוד]. The devastation is meant to be so complete that it includes even those individuals who did not have enough time to gather their weapons before the attack began [מלבי״ם].
