Genesis 24:60Sefaria

Moments before a young woman departs her childhood home to begin a new life, her family offers a parting farewell. Following customary practice [רד״ק], this ancient send-off serves as an early precedent for the traditional bridal blessings recited before a wedding [תורה תמימה, צפנת פענח, מלבי״ם]. Interestingly, their words closely echo the divine promise God made to Abraham at Mount Moriah. This reveals that Abraham's grand destiny and the promises he received were already well known to Laban and his household

Because Isaac had already been promised numerous descendants by God, the family directed their wishes to the bride personally. Knowing that Abraham had taken multiple wives, they wanted to ensure that the promised lineage would emerge exclusively from her. They hoped that she and her specific offspring would be the ones to inherit this divine promise, rather than any other woman Isaac might eventually marry

The family's wish for her to grow into countless multitudes is generally understood by the primary approach among commentators as a blessing for a massive numerical increase in her descendants However, others view this not merely as a biological promise, but as a wish for profound social impact. By virtue of her kind heart, she would perform acts of goodness for countless people, multiplying her allies who would eventually stand by her descendants in times of conflict [כלי יקר]. Another perspective suggests an intellectual and spiritual legacy, blessing her that multitudes of Torah scholars would emerge from her lineage [חתם סופר].

The blessing also includes a promise of triumph and control over enemies, ensuring military success [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, this victory extends beyond the battlefield into the realm of wisdom. Her descendants are blessed to become wise leaders and counselors. Their insight will be so profound that even their adversaries will rely on their guidance and ultimately elevate them to positions of leadership [העמק דבר].

Despite the beautiful sentiments, several commentators detect darker motives lurking beneath the surface of the family's words. By emphasizing their kinship, her wicked relatives secretly hoped her descendants would adopt their corrupt ways [פני דוד]. Furthermore, offering such a blessing contradicted their true nature, as forces of evil inherently despise the success of the righteous [אור החיים]. To prevent her mother and brother from arrogantly claiming that their blessing was responsible for her fertility, she remained barren at the beginning of her marriage. Only after Isaac prayed to God was she granted a child One view even identifies a hidden curse within their words, one that eventually caused the scattering of sages in exile, preventing unified legal consensus, even while spreading holiness throughout the world [חתם סופר].

On a deeper spiritual level, the farewell serves as a promise of divine protection during times of exile. While the Land of Israel is guarded by a natural presence of holy angels, her family blessed her that whenever her descendants would be forced into foreign lands, vast multitudes of guardian angels would accompany them, shielding them from their enemies abroad
